How to interpret intervals
Category | Interval | Percent |
---|---|---|
• Very tall, excessive height | above +3 | 0,1% |
• Tall | +2 ... +3 | 2% |
• Above average, normal | +1 ... +2 | 13% |
• Average, normal | –1 ... +1 | 70% |
• Below average, normal | –2 ... –1 | 13% |
• Stunted | –3 ... –2 | 2% |
• Severely stunted | lower –3 | 0,1% |
According to studies of the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), the category of Stunted and Severely stunted is considered a deviation from the norm, which deserves the attention of a specialist. In addition, stunting can also lead to overweight. The cause of stunting can be both hereditary factors, and poor ecology, disease, prematurity, malnutrition or depletion.
A category of very tall may be normal for a child whose parents are very tall. Otherwise, the child should definitely be checked for the presence of endocrine disorder so that the baby can receive timely treatment.
Other height categories marked in blue are considered normal. In addition to height tables, there are also centile tables of height and weight. For a comprehensive assessment of growth, you can use our calculator for children of any age.
About centile tables of height
The centile table of height is a professional tool for analyzing height deviations from the norm. It is compiled on the basis of statistical data on the height of obviously healthy children.
What are centiles
For a better understanding of the principle, we describe how these tables are compiled in an understandable form. Children of the same age are measured and then lined up in descending order of height, as is done in a physical education lesson. Naturally, they build children not literally, but on paper, based on the data collected. Then, the resulting shirengue is divided into several groups: medium, low, high, very low, very high. So, centiles are called borderline growth values that separate one group of children from another. These values are given in the tables. Centiles are traditionally designated in the form of digits with the sign: –3, –2, –1, +1, +2, +3, in accordance with the rules of statistics and probability theory.
The centiles are selected so that approximately 70% of children fall in the interval of growth values between the –1 and +1 borders, and 13% of children fall between +1 and +2, etc. Such a distribution gives grounds to consider the normal growth between centiles –2 and +2, since it is in this interval that the height of the vast majority of healthy children is (96%).
