According to the methodological recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), the category of Underweight and Severely underweight may indicate depletion of the child's body, which requires the participation of a specialist. The most common cause is malnutrition, illness, or prematurity.

The remaining weight categories do not give an unambiguous idea of compliance with the norm, since weight in this case should be assessed in conjunction with the height of the child using body mass index tables. Depending on the height, the same weight may turn out to be insufficient or excessive for the baby. For an accurate estimate, use our weight and height calculator for children.

About centile tables of weight

The centile table is a professional tool for analyzing weight deviations from the norm. It is compiled on the basis of statistics on obviously healthy children.

What are centiles

Allowing some simplification, we can say that the children of the same age belong to several groups according to their weight, it can be compared with the weight category athletes. Centiles are called borderline weight values that separate one group of children from another. These values are given in the tables. Centiles are traditionally indicated in the form of digits with a sign: –3, –2, –1, +1, +2, +3, according to the methods of statistics and probability theory.

The centiles are selected so that approximately 70% of the children fall in the weight range between the centiles –1 and +1, and 13% of the children fall between +1 and +2, etc. This mechanism allows us to consider the norm between centiles –2 and +2 to be the norm, since the weight of the vast majority of healthy children (96%) is in this interval.
