Tables for assessing the physique of children by body mass index

The following are centile tables for assessing body mass index (BMI):

girls girlby months and girlsweeks,

boys boyby months and boysweeks.

Learn how to interpret the values and principles of these tables.

Recall the calculation formula: BMI = weightkg / heightm2 (for babies up to 2 years should substitute body length instead of height).

You can use our calculator to calculate BMI. See also height and weight tables.

• above average, risk of overweight +1 ... +213%

• Wasted–3 ... –22%
• Severely wasted
lower –30,1%

Categories marked in red are a deviation from the norm, and require special measures to be taken according to the recommendations of a child specialist.

The category of increased weight is a variant of the norm, however, it is additionally characterized by the risk of gaining excess weight. If, with the BMI value being close to centile +1, this risk is only likely, then with a trend to centile +2, it is considered pronounced.

If one of the parents of the baby is obese, then, due to heredity, with a probability of 40%, the child has a risk of gaining excess weight. If both parents have obesity, then this probability increases to 70%. Also, it should be noted that obesity can be combined with stunting.

Other BMI categories marked in blue are considered normal. For a comprehensive assessment of development, use our weight and height calculator for children.

About BMI Centile Tables

A centile table for assessing body mass index is an important tool for analyzing deviations of a child’s weight from the norm. It is compiled on the basis of statistical data on the ratio of weight and height of obviously healthy children. These data were collected and structured by the World Health Organization (WHO) using specially developed techniques.

BMI: Body Mass Index

It would seem that babies are born different (tall, short, full, slim), but medical practice shows that all healthy children grow the same way: growth always corresponds to age, and weight corresponds to growth, and with age this ratio naturally changes. BMI numerically shows how weight relates to height, and is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height expressed in meters:

BMI = weightkg / heightm2

Please note that for children under 2 years of age, BMI is calculated by the length of the body, measured in the supine position, instead of growth.

To calculate BMI automatically, use our calculator.

What are centiles

Obviously healthy children are assigned to different groups depending on their body mass index (BMI). The boundary values of BMI that separate one group from another are called centiles. These values are given in the tables, therefore they are called centile. Traditionally, centiles are designated in the form of numbers with a sign: –3, –2, –1, +1, +2, +3, in accordance with the rules of statistics and probability theory.

The centiles are selected so that approximately 70% of children fall in the BMI interval between the –1 and +1 boundaries, and 13% of children fall between +1 and +2, etc. Such a distribution gives reason to consider the normal growth between centiles –2 and +2, since it is in this interval that the overwhelming majority of healthy children (96%) grow.
